Entrevistamos a Rodrigo Hernando

Hoy os presentamos a Rodrigo Hernando, coach científico y miembro del Comité Científico de la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet. Rodrigo sabe de primera mano que debemos potenciar la investigación, desde enfermedades raras hasta en tecnología. «La investigación, en general, mejora las vidas de las personas y la investigación clínica mejora las vidas de los pacientes».

Rodrigo conoce bien el mundo de la investigación y en su entrevista podrás comprender por qué son más comunes los esfuerzos por investigar en enfermedades comunes (como el cáncer) que las poco frecuentes. Desde la Fundación, con su ayuda y vuestra colaboración, queremos concienciar a la sociedad de que esta dinámica debe cambiar, porque la investigación es igual de necesaria en todos los campos.

INTRODUCCIÓN

¿Por qué te dedicaste a la ciencia?
Desde pequeño he sido muy curioso, siempre observando, tocando y haciendo preguntas para entender las cosas. La ciencia me apasionó desde el primer momento. Me sobrecogía pensar que dentro de cada persona había miles de millones de células funcionando como máquinas (casi) perfectas.

¿Cuándo descubriste tu vocación?
Cuando estudiaba Bioquímica en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, hubo un momento clave que marcó el devenir de los siguientes años. Mi profesor de «señalización celular», Manuel Guzmán, venía a clase y explicaba los aspectos más complejos de la forma más sencilla e interesante. Recuerdo que al acabar una de sus maravillosas clases, me acerqué a él y le confesé que me encantaría participar de la investigación de su laboratorio.

¿Te apoyaron tus padres en tu decisión?
¡Por supuesto! Creo que veían el brillo de ilusión que tenía en los ojos y, claro, contra eso no podían decir mucho…

CAMINO ACADÉMICO

¿Qué carrera has terminado?
Grado en Bioquímica por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid

¿Has hecho un posgrado? ¿Cuál?
Sí, un Máster en Investigación del Cáncer por la Universidad de Salamanca.

¿Cuál es tu especialidad?
Mi especialidad es el desarrollo y la producción de terapias avanzadas, que suponen una verdadera revolución en la medicina ya que permiten curar de forma personalizada, con un enfoque casi específico para cada paciente.

CAMINO PROFESIONAL

¿Fue fácil encontrar un puesto trabajo?
No, no lo fue. Yo quería investigar fuera de la Universidad, en un ambiente de Industria. Pero a los científicos en España, lamentablemente, no nos enseñan a desarrollarnos profesionalmente fuera del manto universitario. Así que tuve que pasar muchos meses investigando sobre la investigación privada antes de dar mi primer pasito profesional, que fue en Reino Unido, en una empresa farmacéutica muy grande llamada GSK.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de ser investigador?
Aunque ahora no ejerzo como investigador, sino como mentor de otros científicos, lo que más me gustaba era sentir que mi trabajo de cada día podía tener un impacto considerable en la vida de las personas. De hecho, uno de los días más especiales de mi carrera fue la primera vez que estuve en una sala de producción de terapias avanzadas donde, literalmente, estás trabajando en algo que unos días después va a poder curar a un paciente con una enfermedad grave.

¿Y lo que menos?
Lo que menos me gusta de la investigación es que la sociedad no entienda muy bien a que nos dedicamos, ni por qué hacemos lo que hacemos. Hace falta más concienciación de la importancia de la ciencia.

¿Cuánto tiempo has sido investigador?
Investigué 4 años en la Universidad y 4 años en Empresa Privada, pero ahora me dedico a formar a otros científicos que buscan dar ese salto profesional fuera de la Universidad. Sigo en contacto con la ciencia y los científicos, aunque en otro plano.

¿Cuál es tu objetivo profesional?
Mi objetivo personal y profesional es que haya más científicos felices y, por tanto, más ciencia para cambiar el mundo.

¿Dónde has trabajado antes?
Hasta ahora, mi carrera profesional ha sido bastante dinámica, habiendo pasado por varias empresas farmacéuticas o biotecnológicas como GSK, Autolus y Biogen.

¿Conoces a alguien que sufra síndrome de Dravet?
Estoy en contacto cercano con familiares de personas con síndrome de Dravet y conozco personalmente a niños y adultos con otras epilepsias graves y complejas.

SOCIEDAD E INVESTIGACIÓN

¿Cuál es la importancia de la investigación en la sociedad?
Inmensa. La investigación es la chispa que da lugar a los avances que después cada uno de nosotros disfrutamos en el día a día. El papel de aluminio, las vacunas, o las placas de inducción: todos estos «inventos» fueron un día parte del experimento de un científico en un laboratorio. La investigación, en general, mejora las vidas de las personas y la investigación clínica mejora las vidas de los pacientes.

¿Crees que es importante la investigación de enfermedades raras?
No es importante, es fundamental. Investigar en una u otra enfermedad no debería ser una decisión sesgada por la prevalencia de dichas enfermedades. Pero claro, investigar en cáncer (u otra «gran enfermedad») es a día de hoy económicamente más viable que investigar en síndrome de Dravet porque es más fácil publicar tus resultados. Es fundamental que esta dinámica se revierta, porque se necesita mucha más investigación en enfermedades raras.

¿Cómo crees que la investigación del síndrome de Dravet puede influir en la sociedad en general?
Investigar en un tema nunca genera impacto solo en ese tema. Las propias publicaciones son redes casi neuronales que, por medio de las referencias, se unen a otras publicaciones de otros ámbitos diversos. Nunca se sabe qué puede salir de la investigación que realizas.

¿Qué te llevo a convertirte en miembro del Comité Científico de la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet?
Las ganas de usar mi conocimiento científico para aportar un granito de arena.

¿Qué beneficios personales obtienes de esta membresía?
He salido de mi zona de confort, he crecido profesionalmente y, además, he conocido a gente maravillosa.

PARA TERMINAR

¿Eres optimista en la lucha contra el síndrome de Dravet? ¿Por qué?
Muy optimista. El síndrome de Dravet es en bastantes ocasiones una enfermedad de base genética y estamos viviendo un tiempo en el que se han revolucionado de las herramientas para investigar y corregir este tipo de enfermedades. Es cuestión de tiempo que una terapia efectiva para el Dravet se apruebe y llegue al público.

¿Alguna recomendación para alguien que está estudiando o empezando su carrera profesional?
Que nunca subestime el impacto que puede tener, dentro o fuera del laboratorio. Las ganas de cambiar el mundo mueven el mundo.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

The Dravet Syndrome Conference 2023 is organised by Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, whose registered office is located at Calle Doctor Fleming, 30, 28036 Madrid, Spain.

The conference shall take place at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid, at Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, 93, 28007 Madrid, Spain, on Thursday 23rd of March 2023. Attendance to this conference is free of charge, but mandatory for organisational reasons.

Participants must register online at www.dravetconference.com. Upon registration, each participant will receive an electronic confirmation by email. On-site registration will not be be possible. If a participant has not received the official email registration confirmation within 3 days, they must contact the conference secretariat at [email protected].

The conference registration includes: Attendance to all sessions, oral and visual presentations, all coffee and lunch breaks, and conference documentation with all information about the event. The registration does not include travel and accommodation costs or any other personal expenses.

Admittance to the conference without registration cannot be granted.

Conference Attendance
Upon arrival at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid the day of the event, all participants have to check-in at the onsite Conference Registration Desk. The desk will open on 23rd of March at 8:30 a.m. Upon registration onsite, the conference team will provide participants with information about the event and a badge, which should be worn visibly at all times. The personalised badge authorises participants to attend all conference sessions, and lunch and coffee breaks.

Cancellation Policy
Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain reserves the right to cancel any registration forthwith and without liability on its part in the event of any damage to, or destruction of the venue by fire, shortage of labour, strikes, industrial unrest, public health measures, or any other cause beyond the control of the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, which shall prevent it from performing its obligations. In these circumstances, every effort will be made to find an alternative format/venue or propose a new date for the conference. Should the conference be cancelled for any reason, airfares, hotels, or other costs incurred by the participants are not reimbursed by the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain.

Any participant is allowed to cancel his/her registration but must notify this to the conference organisers by e-mail at [email protected] within a minimum of 10 days prior the event. Failure to attend the event without prior written notification by email may incur a no-show fee, which shall cover individual organizational, material and catering costs.

Name Change
All registrations are only valid for the respective person mentioned in the form. A registered participant unable to attend the conference may nominate (free of charge) a substitute participant by notifying the conference organisers by email at [email protected] before 16th of March 2023. The procedure allows giving the last name, first name, and email address of the new participant.

Personal Data
Upon registration, the participant authorises Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain to use their personal data stated above to inform the participant of any further conferences, events, or information concerning the conference and Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain’s activities. The conference booklet online will only contain authors, titles, and affiliations of submitted abstracts, but no full abstract texts. The conference printed booklet will contain full abstract texts from all participants. Conference certificates will be sent to the participants as a PDF document upon request at [email protected]. Only the name & affiliation will be stated in the certificate, not the email addresses of the participants.

Information is collected by an automated computer system that manages registrations. Security and confidentiality are guaranteed by state-of-the-art technical tools. However, Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain declines any responsibility concerning data security transmitted through the internet.

Photography
The conference is held in public; therefore, we do not ban participants, exhibitors, partners and other companies from taking photographs of conference activities and participants, and share it via social media. By participating in the conference, you approve that general pictures will be taken and used for our Social Media output, our websites and other communication purposes. You hereby waive any right to oppose, and expressly authorise the organiser to make them available on the Internet or as it may seem fit. Author’s presentation slides shall not be photographed by any conference participant. 

Disclaimer
The conference organiser cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or damage to any property, whatever the cause may be.
