Entrevistamos a Eduardo Junco

Hoy os presentamos a Eduardo Junco Anós, responsable médico de Zogenix. Eduardo trabaja en diferentes proyectos de investigación y en esta entrevista leerás, además de que la investigación se valora muy poco, que: «me llama la atención la irrelevancia de la investigación en nuestra sociedad comparado con el deporte, el cine, o el mundo del espectáculo. A mí me encantaría ver algún día a un buen investigador español firmando autógrafos y siendo entrevistado en prime time en algún canal de televisión». ¿Por qué crees que ocurre esta infravaloración? Desde la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet trabajamos para dar visibilidad a todos los científicos y médicos detrás de la lucha contra esta enfermedad. ¡Ayúdanos a valorar su magnífico e imprescindible trabajo compartiendo esta entrevista!

INTRODUCCIÓN

¿Por qué quisiste ser médico?
Mi padre es pediatra y siempre, desde muy pequeño, le he admirado muchísimo por su entrega y vocación constante a sus pacientes. Parecerme a él en este sentido siempre fue mi deseo y esta es la razón fundamental de que escogiese está gran profesión.
Con el tiempo y dentro de las diferentes facetas de la medicina, la investigación y la gestión sanitaria fueron los aspectos que más me interesaron y en donde me encontré más a gusto.

CAMINO ACADÉMICO

¿Has hecho un posgrado? ¿Cuál?
Tengo un Diploma de Estudios Avanzados en Medicina Preventiva y Salud Pública por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, así como un Máster en Dirección y Gestión de Servicios Sanitarios por la Universidad Pompeu Fabra.

¿Cuál es tu especialidad?
Medicina Familiar y Comunitaria

¿Te costó llegar a ser médico?
No tengo la sensación de haber hecho un gran esfuerzo. Siempre he visto natural estudiar y lo he considerado una parte integrada en mi día a día desde hace mucho tiempo. Por otro lado, no creo que exista una carrera más bonita que medicina. Todo el proceso que te conduce a ser médico es maravilloso porque, más allá de lo que muchos puedan pensar, trasciende del conocimiento técnico y te permite profundizar en aspectos filosóficos de la vida profundamente humanos. Es una carrera que te realiza como persona en todos los sentidos.

¿Qué valores crees que se necesitan para ser médico?
Entrega, vocación, resistencia, constancia y aprender a manejar la incertidumbre.

CAMINO PROFESIONAL

¿Fue fácil encontrar un puesto trabajo?
No fue difícil encontrar un trabajo. Encontrar “El trabajo” es otra cosa. Sin embargo, ahora creo que lo he encontrado.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu trabajo?
En mi trabajo actual como responsable médico de Zogenix, valoro mucho la versatilidad de proyectos. Más allá de los proyectos de investigación, que ocupan una parte fundamental de mi día a día, hay un montón de cosas de muy diversa índole que tengo que hacer. Mucha gente muy distinta y con perfiles muy variados, profesiones diversas y países distintos con la que interacciono a diario y esto para mi es esencial y muy motivador.

¿Y lo que menos?
Imagino que como a mucha gente, me gustaría dedicarle más tiempo a mi familia y en muchas ocasiones el trabajo no me lo permite. Esta es la gran contradicción del trabajo, a pesar de que te guste y te entregues a él encantado, siempre hay otras cosas que te gustan más y a las que también te quieres entregar. Creo que compaginar esta dualidad es una de las claves de la existencia.

¿Cuánto tiempo llevas siendo médico?
Más de 20 años.

¿Cuál es tu objetivo profesional?
Mejorar cada día en lo que hago.

¿Dónde has trabajado antes?
En otras compañías farmacéuticas. En la gestión clínica y durante 8 años la atención sanitaria como médico de familia.

¿Por qué investigas el síndrome de Dravet?
Creo que todas las enfermedades merecen ser investigadas, pero quizá patologías como el síndrome de Dravet están, si cabe, más necesitadas de recursos en general y de tratamientos eficaces en particular. En este sentido creo que merece mucho la pena trabajar en esta área, procurando mejorar la vida de los pacientes con síndrome de Dravet y la de sus familias.

¿Conoces a alguien que sufra síndrome de Dravet?
No personalmente. Sin embargo, el hijo de una amiga tiene una encefalopatía epiléptica del desarrollo debida a una mutación de novo, que, aunque no es Dravet, presenta una sintomatología muy similar.
Cuando lo vives más cerca entiendes muchas cosas que son imposibles de comprender sobre el papel. Más allá del sufrimiento personal del paciente comprendes la trascendencia familiar y social de este tipo de enfermedades.

¿Qué proyectos tienes para este año?
Estamos trabajando en muy diversos proyectos. Todos centrados en los pacientes con síndrome de Dravet y muchos de ellos colaborativos con otras instituciones como la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet u otras asociaciones de pacientes, Sociedades Científicas, Hospitales, etc.
Desde la financiación de estudios iniciados por investigadores, hasta consensos de expertos sobre cómo manejar la enfermedad, pasando por el desarrollo de programas de apoyo a los hermanos de pacientes con Dravet.
Actualmente en España, estamos involucrados de alguna manera en 5 proyectos de investigación distintos. Además, estamos en proceso de discusión y valorando la posibilidad de implicarnos en alguno más.

EL DÍA A DÍA

¿Cuántos pacientes has visto o puedes llegar a ver en una guardia/turno?
En la época en la que trabajaba en las urgencias del Hospital La Paz, había guardias en las que podías llegar a ver más de 30 pacientes.

¿Se te hace difícil explicarle al paciente o a su familia la enfermedad que padece?
Siempre fue un reto hacerlo, pero considero que es una parte esencial y muy importante de todo el proceso asistencial. Como decía antes y más allá de las habilidades técnicas, un buen médico debe ser un humanista capaz de comunicar de manera excelente.

¿Ha cambiado mucho el diagnóstico para el síndrome de Dravet desde que empezaste?
Lo primero es señalar que posiblemente ahora sea una enfermedad algo más conocida que hace 20 años. El diagnóstico es fundamentalmente clínico y por tanto eso no ha cambiado tanto en los últimos años. Sin embargo, debido a que ahora se trata de una enfermedad que está presente en las mentes de neurólogos y neuropediatras, se tiene más en cuenta a la hora de llevar a cabo un diagnóstico diferencial. Finalmente resaltar que las pruebas diagnósticas genéticas están siendo un punto de inflexión en el proceso diagnóstico y facilitando la corroboración del mismo, así como la detección de casos de pacientes mal diagnosticados o sin diagnosticar.

¿Cuál ha sido la experiencia médica más compleja que has vivido?
Sacar adelante un proyecto de investigación, un ensayo clínico o un estudio multicéntrico de ámbito internacional es de lo más complejo a lo que me he enfrentado. Sin embargo, trabajar en urgencias del Hospital La Paz fue de las experiencias más duras.

¿A veces te sientes afectado por los casos de tus pacientes?
Muchas veces me ocurrió mientras ejercí. Es imposible permanecer inmune al sufrimiento ajeno. La empatía es una cualidad fundamental que está en la esencia del ser médico. Hoy en día, a pesar de no ejercer regularmente, en el ámbito de mi vida privada sigo ejerciendo y cado caso en el que me implico me afecta y me compromete.

SOCIEDAD E INVESTIGACIÓN

¿Cuál es la importancia de la investigación en la sociedad?
Aunque lamentablemente creo que no se da suficiente importancia a la investigación, sin duda es fundamental. Cada investigador es importante por pequeño que sea su proyecto. No comprendo que la sociedad valore tanto a los deportistas, por ejemplo, y tan poco a los investigadores. No quiero decir con esto que un deportista no tenga mérito o no sea valioso, simplemente me llama la atención la irrelevancia de la investigación en nuestra sociedad comparado con el deporte, el cine o el mundo del espectáculo. A mí me encantaría ver algún día a un buen investigador español firmando autógrafos y siendo entrevistado en prime time en algún canal de televisión.

¿Cómo crees que la investigación del síndrome de Dravet puede influir en la sociedad en general?
El impacto de mejorar la situación de un paciente con síndrome de Dravet impacta más allá del individuo. Su familia, su entorno, todo lo que está relacionado con el enfermo y todas las personas que se relacionan con él, se ven positivamente impactadas cuando el enfermo mejora.

¿Crees que es importante la labor de las organizaciones de pacientes?
Es fundamental en ambas vertientes.

¿Colaboras con alguna organización de pacientes?
Con todas las españolas de manera directa.

PARA TERMINAR

¿Eres optimista en la lucha contra el síndrome de Dravet? ¿Por qué?
Sí. A corto plazo y durante los próximos años van a llegar nuevos tratamientos que mejorarán definitivamente la evolución de los pacientes con síndrome de Dravet. Además, en el medio y largo plazo existen iniciativas muy prometedoras y disruptivas que prometen ser una verdadera revolución para los pacientes con Dravet y otras epilepsias genéticas. En cualquier caso, hay que ser prudentes y continuar trabajando para que ese futuro que se vislumbra llegue a ser una realidad.

¿Alguna recomendación para alguien que está estudiando o empezando su carrera profesional?
Hay que tomarse el estudio como un placer y una carrera de fondo. Disfrutar y aprovechar muy bien el privilegio de ser estudiante. Creo que lo demás llega solo.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

The Dravet Syndrome Conference 2023 is organised by Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, whose registered office is located at Calle Doctor Fleming, 30, 28036 Madrid, Spain.

The conference shall take place at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid, at Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, 93, 28007 Madrid, Spain, on Thursday 23rd of March 2023. Attendance to this conference is free of charge, but mandatory for organisational reasons.

Participants must register online at www.dravetconference.com. Upon registration, each participant will receive an electronic confirmation by email. On-site registration will not be be possible. If a participant has not received the official email registration confirmation within 3 days, they must contact the conference secretariat at [email protected].

The conference registration includes: Attendance to all sessions, oral and visual presentations, all coffee and lunch breaks, and conference documentation with all information about the event. The registration does not include travel and accommodation costs or any other personal expenses.

Admittance to the conference without registration cannot be granted.

Conference Attendance
Upon arrival at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid the day of the event, all participants have to check-in at the onsite Conference Registration Desk. The desk will open on 23rd of March at 8:30 a.m. Upon registration onsite, the conference team will provide participants with information about the event and a badge, which should be worn visibly at all times. The personalised badge authorises participants to attend all conference sessions, and lunch and coffee breaks.

Cancellation Policy
Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain reserves the right to cancel any registration forthwith and without liability on its part in the event of any damage to, or destruction of the venue by fire, shortage of labour, strikes, industrial unrest, public health measures, or any other cause beyond the control of the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, which shall prevent it from performing its obligations. In these circumstances, every effort will be made to find an alternative format/venue or propose a new date for the conference. Should the conference be cancelled for any reason, airfares, hotels, or other costs incurred by the participants are not reimbursed by the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain.

Any participant is allowed to cancel his/her registration but must notify this to the conference organisers by e-mail at [email protected] within a minimum of 10 days prior the event. Failure to attend the event without prior written notification by email may incur a no-show fee, which shall cover individual organizational, material and catering costs.

Name Change
All registrations are only valid for the respective person mentioned in the form. A registered participant unable to attend the conference may nominate (free of charge) a substitute participant by notifying the conference organisers by email at [email protected] before 16th of March 2023. The procedure allows giving the last name, first name, and email address of the new participant.

Personal Data
Upon registration, the participant authorises Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain to use their personal data stated above to inform the participant of any further conferences, events, or information concerning the conference and Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain’s activities. The conference booklet online will only contain authors, titles, and affiliations of submitted abstracts, but no full abstract texts. The conference printed booklet will contain full abstract texts from all participants. Conference certificates will be sent to the participants as a PDF document upon request at [email protected]. Only the name & affiliation will be stated in the certificate, not the email addresses of the participants.

Information is collected by an automated computer system that manages registrations. Security and confidentiality are guaranteed by state-of-the-art technical tools. However, Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain declines any responsibility concerning data security transmitted through the internet.

Photography
The conference is held in public; therefore, we do not ban participants, exhibitors, partners and other companies from taking photographs of conference activities and participants, and share it via social media. By participating in the conference, you approve that general pictures will be taken and used for our Social Media output, our websites and other communication purposes. You hereby waive any right to oppose, and expressly authorise the organiser to make them available on the Internet or as it may seem fit. Author’s presentation slides shall not be photographed by any conference participant. 

Disclaimer
The conference organiser cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or damage to any property, whatever the cause may be. Should, for any reason outside the organiser’s control (e.g., political or economic circumstances or a case of ‘force majeure’), the venue or speakers change, or the event be cancelled, the organiser will endeavour to reschedule, but shall not be held responsible for any costs, damages or expenses incurred by the participants. The procedure allows giving the last name, first name, and email address of the new participant.

Personal Data
Upon registration, the participant authorises Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain to use their personal data stated above to inform the participant of any further conferences, events, or information concerning the conference and Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain’s activities. The conference booklet online will only contain authors, titles, and affiliations of submitted abstracts, but no full abstract texts. The conference printed booklet will contain full abstract texts from all participants. Conference certificates will be sent to the participants as a PDF document upon request at [email protected]. Only the name & affiliation will be stated in the certificate, not the email addresses of the participants.

Information is collected by an automated computer system that manages registrations. Security and confidentiality are guaranteed by state-of-the-art technical tools. However, Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain declines any responsibility concerning data security transmitted through the internet.

Photography
The conference is held in public; therefore, we do not ban participants, exhibitors, partners and other companies from taking photographs of conference activities and participants, and share it via social media. By participating in the conference, you approve that general pictures will be taken and used for our Social Media output, our websites and other communication purposes. You hereby waive any right to oppose, and expressly authorise the organiser to make them available on the Internet or as it may seem fit. Author’s presentation slides shall not be photographed by any conference participant. 

Disclaimer
The conference organiser cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or damage to any property, whatever the cause may be. Should, for any reason outside the organiser’s control (e.g., political or economic circumstances or a case of ‘force majeure’), the venue or speakers change, or the event be cancelled, the organiser will endeavour to reschedule, but shall not be held responsible for any costs, damages or expenses incurred by the participants. If for any reason the organiser decides to make material changes to this conference, the organiser is not responsible for airfares, hotels or other costs incurred by the participants. The participant takes part in the conference, all tours, and trips at his own risk.
