European Dravet Syndrome Conference 2024: Avances y Esperanza

Representantes de pacientes, líderes de la industria farmáceutica, profesionales sanitarios e investigadores científicos de todo el mundo se unieron durante dos días en la European Dravet Syndrome Conference 2024, un evento lleno de conocimiento y esperanza.

José Ángel Aibar, presidente de la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet, y Mar Rocha, miembro de la Junta Directiva del Colegio Oficial de Enfermería de Madrid, nos dieron la bienvenida. Además, tuvimos el honor de contar con la presencia de la Dra. Helen Cross, presidenta de la Liga Internacional contra la Epilepsia, y el Dr. Lieven Lagae, miembro de nuestro comité científico, quien también moderó nuestra primera sesión sobre perspectivas del síndrome de Dravet. Durante esta sesión, tuvimos la oportunidad de escuchar la perspectiva de un neurólogo joven, el Dr. Ángel Aledo, y la perspectiva de una neuróloga con décadas de experiencia, la Dra. Helen Cross.

La segunda sesión, moderada por el Dr. Vicente Villanueva, abordó los aspectos más amplios del síndrome de Dravet. Se discutieron estrategias y redes de apoyo para las familias, presentadas por el Dr. Stéphane Auvin. Además, tuvimos la oportunidad de escuchar a Sandra Sánchez, hermana de un paciente con síndrome de Dravet, en una charla emotiva que nos hizo reflexionar sobre cómo afecta esta enfermedad a la unidad familiar. En la misma sesión, el Dr. Álvaro Beltrán Corbellini profundizó en los síntomas que no son crisis epilépticas, resaltando la importancia de llevar a cabo estudios científicos de alta calidad para comprender aspectos como la comunicación, el comportamiento, la motricidad y los síntomas gastrointestinales, entre otros. Finalmente, Javier Peña Ceballos nos presentó la relevancia de la enfermería en el manejo del síndrome de Dravet, destacando la importancia de la formación y la colaboración entre enfermeros y neurólogos.

Durante la pausa para el café, dimos la oportunidad a algunos asistentes seleccionados para exponer sus pósteres científicos. Este momento fue propicio para que los asistentes se conocieran, compartieran sus trabajos y establecieran conexiones y posible colaboraciones.

La sesión posterior se centró en las manifestaciones del síndrome de Dravet en adultos, moderada por la Dra. Danielle Andrade. El Dr. Franck Kalume y el Dr. Mantegazza Mantegazza presentaron datos sobre longevidad y posibles mecanismos de la SUDEP en modelos animales para que este conocimiento nos ayude a prevenirla y a enfrentarnos a ella. En esta misma sesión, la Dra. Danielle Andrade y el Dr. Vicente Villanueva ofrecieron perspectivas clínicas, incluyendo la posibilidad de que el síndrome de Dravet evolucione de una enfermedad del neurodesarrollo a una enfermedad neurodegenerativa en la edad adulta. Además, se brindaron recomendaciones clínicas sobre cómo mejorar la comunicación entre neurólogos y familias en temas complejos como la SUDEP.

Después de cada sesión, se reservó tiempo para preguntas de los asistentes, lo que generó discusiones sobre cómo apoyar aún más a las familias afectadas y el efecto a largo plazo de los fármacos anticrisis en infantes y niños, entre otros.

Después de una pausa para comer, nos sumergimos en dos sesiones sobre qué nos depara el futuro. La primera sesión exploró los fármacos en desarrollo, presentada por nuestra directora científica, la Dra. Simona Giorgi. Además, escuchamos a la Dra. Rima Nabbout y al Dr. Lieven Lagae, quienes nos hablaron de los desafíos para los ensayos clínicos del futuro y de los fármacos serotonérgicos, similares a la fenfluramina, que se están desarrollando.

En la segunda sesión, enfocada en el futuro del tratamiento y manejo del síndrome de Dravet, el Dr. Rubén Hernández nos habló sobre el desarrollo de vectores virales adenoasociados. Por otro lado, la Dra. Maria Candida Vila, de Encoded Therapeutics, compartió datos preclínicos y los estudios de historia natural que llevaron a la apertura de ensayos clínicos de terapia génica en Estados Unidos, Reino Unido y Australia. Durante esta sesión, también escuchamos a la Dra. María Ballardó Petitbó, quien nos presentó un proyecto en sus primeras etapas para mejorar el diagnóstico. Finalmente, la Dra. Judith Marin Corral nos habló sobre cómo podemos utilizar la inteligencia artificial y el aprendizaje automático para el diagnóstico de enfermedades raras.

La última sesión del primer día se centró en la investigación básica. Escuchamos al Dr. Juan Antinao Díaz sobre el desarrollo de un nuevo vector viral para la terapia génica. Luego, Martina Mainardi compartió su investigación sobre modelos animales que permiten recuperar la actividad de Nav 1.1, la proteína producida por el gen SCN1A. La jornada concluyó con una charla de la Dra. Else Tolner, quien presentó un método de electroencefalograma funcional para identificar marcadores que nos ayuden a evaluar la eficacia de los medicamentos contra las crisis.

El primer día fue realmente intenso, lleno de charlas extremadamente interesantes en diferentes aspectos, tales como el diagnóstico, el tratamiento y el manejo del síndrome de Dravet.

El segundo día la conferencia comenzó con una sesión dinámica sobre las ventajas y desventajas de las nuevas opciones terapéuticas. Esta sesión fue liderada por la Dra. Heidrun Potschka y el Dr. Rubén Hernández y fue seguida por un debate animado entre los asistentes. Se habló de lo que hemos aprendido del desarrollo de fenfluramina, para que el desarrollo de nuevos fármacos con el mismo mecanismo (serotonérgicos) sea más fácil y rápido, así como de nuevos fármacos sintomáticos que están en desarrollo. Después se abordaron los posibles mecanismos de terapia génica que se podrían desarrollar e incluso si se podría aplicar la terapia celular al tratamiento del síndrome de Dravet.

Después tuvimos una sesión enfocada a la investigación, la segunda sesión de este tipo de nuestra conferencia, moderada por el Dr. Massimo Manetgazza. La Dra. Simona Giorgi, nuestra directora científica, presentó el proyecto “Research Kit para el Síndrome de Dravet”, a través del cual Fundación está desarrollando herramientas para la investigación básica y preclínica. Después la Dra. Jaqueline Heighway presentó su trabajo sobre un posible nuevo mecanismo patogénico del síndrome de Dravet, llamado dominancia negativa, donde se ha visto que Nav 1.1 “sano” podría hacer dímeros con el canal mutado, lo cual disminuiría la actividad del canal.

Después de una breve pausa para el café, seguimos con una sesión dinámica liderada por la Dra. Rima Nabbout, sobre la estratificación de pacientes, es decir la clasificación de los pacientes según su nivel de gravedad, lo cual ayudaría a definir el pronóstico. Esta sesión despertó muchas preguntas en los asistentes sobre cuáles son los mejores métodos para esta clasificación y si deberíamos considerar las mutaciones genéticas como principal criterio de clasificación.

La siguiente sesión fue un panel de expertos liderada por el Dr. Franck Kalume sobre cómo enfrentarnos a los desafíos en el desarrollo de terapias avanzadas para enfermedades del sistema nervioso central. En esta sesión participaron distinguidos ponentes como Álvaro Abad, abogado especializado en regulación farmacéutica, Krista Armstrong experta en coordinación de ensayos clínicos, Dra Laia Turón, neuróloga pediátrica y Dr Martin Bohlen, neurocientífico que trabaja en terapia génica en primates. La variada experiencia que estos ponentes llevaron al escenario fue muy enriquecedora, ya que cada ponente aportó su punto de vista. En este panel de discusión se habló, entre otros asuntos, de cómo mejorar el diagnóstico, de la importancia de la investigación en animales antes de llevar un compuesto a la clínica, y de cómo poder mejorar la regulación para ensayos clínicos y reembolso, sobre todo para terapias avanzadas. Además, se habló de cómo los investigadores pueden colaborar con las empresas farmacéuticas para facilitar la salida al mercado de terapias avanzadas en enfermedades raras.

Después de una pausa para comer, tuvimos la última sesión de investigación, moderada por la Dra. Gaia Colasante. En esta sesión Álvaro Sierra nos habló de un estudio sobre la mielinización en un modelo de ratón de síndrome de Dravet y el efecto del cannabidiol en la mielina. Después, Shir Quinn nos habló de cómo las alteraciones visuales en el síndrome de Dravet pueden estar causadas por alteraciones talámicas y corticales, mientras que la última charla fue impartida por el Dr Massimo Mantegazza, que nos habló del análisis de disfunciones preictales (antes de las crisis epilépticas) en EEG en modelos de ratones.

Finalmente José Ángel Aibar y la Dra Helen Cross otorgaron los premios para mejor póster a Martina Mainardi, de la universidad Vita-Salute San Raffaele, y para mejor presentación oral a Jaqueline Heighway, del CNRS-Universidad de la Costa Azul.

La European Dravet Syndrome Conference 2024 fue un faro de luz en la búsqueda continua de respuestas y soluciones para el síndrome de Dravet. Con cada presentación, cada intercambio de ideas y cada nueva conexión formada, nos acercamos un paso más a un futuro donde esta condición pueda ser no solo manejable, sino también curable. La dedicación y el compromiso mostrados por todos los participantes fueron el claro testimonio de la fuerza de la comunidad científica y médica, y un recordatorio de que, juntos, podemos superar los desafíos más difíciles. Que este evento sirva como un recordatorio de que el progreso está en marcha y que la esperanza, al igual que el conocimiento, sigue creciendo día a día.

Un sueño, una meta.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

The Dravet Syndrome Conference 2023 is organised by Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, whose registered office is located at Calle Doctor Fleming, 30, 28036 Madrid, Spain.

The conference shall take place at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid, at Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, 93, 28007 Madrid, Spain, on Thursday 23rd of March 2023. Attendance to this conference is free of charge, but mandatory for organisational reasons.

Participants must register online at www.dravetconference.com. Upon registration, each participant will receive an electronic confirmation by email. On-site registration will not be be possible. If a participant has not received the official email registration confirmation within 3 days, they must contact the conference secretariat at [email protected].

The conference registration includes: Attendance to all sessions, oral and visual presentations, all coffee and lunch breaks, and conference documentation with all information about the event. The registration does not include travel and accommodation costs or any other personal expenses.

Admittance to the conference without registration cannot be granted.

Conference Attendance
Upon arrival at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid the day of the event, all participants have to check-in at the onsite Conference Registration Desk. The desk will open on 23rd of March at 8:30 a.m. Upon registration onsite, the conference team will provide participants with information about the event and a badge, which should be worn visibly at all times. The personalised badge authorises participants to attend all conference sessions, and lunch and coffee breaks.

Cancellation Policy
Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain reserves the right to cancel any registration forthwith and without liability on its part in the event of any damage to, or destruction of the venue by fire, shortage of labour, strikes, industrial unrest, public health measures, or any other cause beyond the control of the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, which shall prevent it from performing its obligations. In these circumstances, every effort will be made to find an alternative format/venue or propose a new date for the conference. Should the conference be cancelled for any reason, airfares, hotels, or other costs incurred by the participants are not reimbursed by the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain.

Any participant is allowed to cancel his/her registration but must notify this to the conference organisers by e-mail at [email protected] within a minimum of 10 days prior the event. Failure to attend the event without prior written notification by email may incur a no-show fee, which shall cover individual organizational, material and catering costs.

Name Change
All registrations are only valid for the respective person mentioned in the form. A registered participant unable to attend the conference may nominate (free of charge) a substitute participant by notifying the conference organisers by email at [email protected] before 16th of March 2023. The procedure allows giving the last name, first name, and email address of the new participant.

Personal Data
Upon registration, the participant authorises Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain to use their personal data stated above to inform the participant of any further conferences, events, or information concerning the conference and Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain’s activities. The conference booklet online will only contain authors, titles, and affiliations of submitted abstracts, but no full abstract texts. The conference printed booklet will contain full abstract texts from all participants. Conference certificates will be sent to the participants as a PDF document upon request at [email protected]. Only the name & affiliation will be stated in the certificate, not the email addresses of the participants.

Information is collected by an automated computer system that manages registrations. Security and confidentiality are guaranteed by state-of-the-art technical tools. However, Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain declines any responsibility concerning data security transmitted through the internet.

Photography
The conference is held in public; therefore, we do not ban participants, exhibitors, partners and other companies from taking photographs of conference activities and participants, and share it via social media. By participating in the conference, you approve that general pictures will be taken and used for our Social Media output, our websites and other communication purposes. You hereby waive any right to oppose, and expressly authorise the organiser to make them available on the Internet or as it may seem fit. Author’s presentation slides shall not be photographed by any conference participant. 

Disclaimer
The conference organiser cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or damage to any property, whatever the cause may be. Should the conference be cancelled for any reason, airfares, hotels, or other costs incurred by the participants are not reimbursed by the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain.

Any participant is allowed to cancel his/her registration but must notify this to the conference organisers by e-mail at [email protected] within a minimum of 10 days prior the event. Failure to attend the event without prior written notification by email may incur a no-show fee, which shall cover individual organizational, material and catering costs.

Name Change
All registrations are only valid for the respective person mentioned in the form. A registered participant unable to attend the conference may nominate (free of charge) a substitute participant by notifying the conference organisers by email at [email protected] before 24th of March 2022. The procedure allows giving the last name, first name, and email address of the new participant.

Personal Data
Upon registration, the participant authorises Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain to use their personal data stated above to inform the participant of any further conferences, events, or information concerning the conference and Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain’s activities. The conference booklet online will only contain authors, titles, and affiliations of submitted abstracts, but no full abstract texts. The conference printed booklet will contain full abstract texts from all participants. Conference certificates will be sent to the participants as a PDF document upon request at [email protected]. Only the name & affiliation will be stated in the certificate, not the email addresses of the participants.

Information is collected by an automated computer system that manages registrations. Security and confidentiality are guaranteed by state-of-the-art technical tools. However, Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain declines any responsibility concerning data security transmitted through the internet.

Photography
The conference is held in public; therefore, we do not ban participants, exhibitors, partners and other companies from taking photographs of conference activities and participants, and share it via social media. By participating in the conference, you approve that general pictures will be taken and used for our Social Media output, our websites and other communication purposes. You hereby waive any right to oppose, and expressly authorise the organiser to make them available on the Internet or as it may seem fit. Author’s presentation slides shall not be photographed by any conference participant. 

Disclaimer
The conference organiser cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or damage to any property, whatever the cause may be. Should, for any reason outside the organiser’s control (e.g., political or economic circumstances or a case of ‘force majeure’), the venue or speakers change, or the event be cancelled, the organiser will endeavour to reschedule, but shall not be held responsible for any costs, damages or expenses incurred by the participants. If for any reason the organiser decides to make material changes to this conference, the organiser is not responsible for airfares, hotels or other costs incurred by the participants. The participant takes part in the conference, all tours, and trips at his own risk.
